《西部中医药》杂志原名《甘肃中医》(创刊于1988年)，是经国家科委和国家新闻出版署批准由甘肃省卫生健康委员会主管，中华中医药学会、甘肃省中医药研究院主办的专业性学术期刊。以反映西部地区中医药研究、开发和应用成果，传播中医药信息与研究动态，继承发扬中医中药传统，促进中医药理论研究与学术交流为办刊宗旨。本着提高为主，提高与普及相结合的办刊方针，设有论著：理论论著、临床论著;方药：道地药材、方剂配伍、药理研究、质量分析、制剂工艺、本草新证;陇右医学：敦煌医学、岐黄医学、汉简医学、皇甫谧医学、伏羲文化、陇中骨伤;论坛：学术传承、博士论坛、医史文献、中医文化、教学研究、医疗管理、学术争鸣、杏林留芳、释古博今、医理溯源;专题：丝路医药、民族医药、灾害医学、流行病学、政策法规、调查分析、标准规范、域外汉方;报道：临证经验、衷中参西、特色医疗、临床护理、诊断剖析;动态：前沿探索、研究进展、品墨闻香、译林新意等栏目。读者对象是从事中西医药教学、科研、医疗、生产人员以及中医药院校的高年级学生等。
